What is Purity?

Purity: is defined as freedom from adulteration or contamination, the freedom from immorality, especially of a sexual nature.

-Dictionary.com

Why should we have it?

Blessed are those that are pure in heart, for they will see God.

Matthew 5:8

As Christians and followers of Christ, we should have purity because God is pure. We have to be pure in our hearts, and in our minds. When we are born into this world we are already tainted with sin. We have to work daily to keep ourselves from sin and remain as whole as possible by being clean, blameless, and undefiled of sin. At this, you may be thinking how can we be untainted from sin if we are already born into it?

I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Matthew 3:11

But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.

Malachi 3:2

Have no fear, I will tell you how. Jesus already died for our sins. For those who want to be made clean and want to be refined, you can be baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire. To be made pure we have to confess our sins, be humble, have asceticism, and repent daily. We are an extension of Jesus. God wants us to follow in Jesus’s footsteps and do our best to be as close to him as possible. The only way that we can absolutely be pure is through giving ourselves over to God and praying for him to cleanse us.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10

What Does the Bible Say About Being Pure?

The bible talks about purity in a different light than one would expect. Throughout the bible, it tells us what not to do in order to be holy, which is a form of purity. In various scripture, it speaks about how we should present our bodies as well as what to look out for in order to not taint ourselves.

Marital Sex: Becoming of One Flesh

When you agree to save yourself for your spouse, your marital bond is blessed with the following.

  • Protection/ Covenants

    • Becoming one flesh with your spouse brings forth a covenant that is protected by God. God indeed is pleased with your commitment to one another when you act in this manner. The couple is also protected from sexual immorality. 1 Corinthians 7:1-4

    • As I mentioned earlier, when we have sex with someone, we join together in the most intimate and vulnerable way with not only our hearts and minds but with our bodies. To save yourself for marriage means that you are giving your significant other a whole piece of you. Sex truly is meant for married couples, because it is there where it is in its purest form. In marriage is where we become and stay whole with each other. [But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry,u for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 1 corinthians 7:9]

    • Now, if you are in the same boat where many of us are, myself included, where you have already had sex outside of wedlock, you are not canceled out. It is never too late to save yourself, take about of celibacy until you find that special someone, and in the meantime pray to God and ask Him to cleanse you to make you pure, and ask him to make you whole once more. [Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Hebrews 13:4]

    • In many relationships these days the foundation is built on sex and lust so when a storm comes it’s not built to sustain or withstand. The relationship quickly dissolves and leaves people feeling broken and empty and that is because they gave up too much of themselves with the wrong people. So what happens when you take sex out of the equation they are two strangers that don’t really know much about each other. [Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 1 corinthians 6:18]

    • Sex is something that is meant to be pure and exclusive between married people. So take the time before you get into a relationship to first get to know yourself, then when you begin to date take that time to get to know them. Using that time to get to know each other helps you to build a sturdy foundation that can weather the storms when they come. It will sustain you when you have been married for decades.

    • If you were to ask a couple that has been happily married for 45-50 years, how they stayed together for so long, 9 times out of 10, sex will be the last answer they will give you. More likely than not what they will tell you is God, consistent and vulnerable communication, active listening, and the three components of the love triangle.

For Homework Read 1 Corinthians 7:1-40 to further your knowledge.

  • Procreation

    • Becoming one flesh with your spouse gives you the opportunity to be fruitful and multiply. [So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.Genesis 1: 27-28] God designed it for us to procreate in the sanction of marriage.

  • Pleasure

    • Pleasure is also an important element in having sex in a marital bed. If God ordained it then it’s not bad. Even the Bible shows us that appreciating our spouse is pleasing to God. Blessing her with attentiveness and passion.

How beautiful you are and how pleasing, my love, with your delights!

Your stature is like that of the palm, and your breasts like clusters of fruit.

I said, “I will climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.”

May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine, the fragrance of your breath like apples, and your mouth like the best wine. She May the wine go straight to my beloved, flowing gently over lips and teeth. I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me. Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages. Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom- there I will give you my love.

Songs of Soloman 7:6-12

  • Intimacy

    • I mean, enough is clearly said in Proverbs 5:18-19. If that’s not intimacy then I don’t know what is! 😂

Let your fountain be blessed,

and rejoice in the wife of your youth,

a lovely deer, a graceful doe.

Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight;

be intoxicated always in her love.

Proverbs 5: 18-19

People In the Bible That Presented Themselves Pure?

Like we have been discussing in the previous post, there are many examples of people that were pure in God’s eyes in the bible for many reasons. Remember that, All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. [2 Timothy 3:116-17] Let’s dive in and find out who!

Mary (Jesus’ mother)

If you will turn in your bibles with me to [Luke 1:26-38] you will be able to follow along with me. Now let’s talk about Mary, Mary was hand-selected by God to fulfill one of his greatest Prophecies. Mary was a virgin that was set to be married to a man named Joseph when an angel named Gabriel visited her in a town named Nazareth. On God’s orders, the angel told Mary that she would soon become pregnant and give birth to the Son of God and he will be called Jesus. Mary was in disbelief because she was a virgin but the angel assured her that she was highly favored by God, the angel instructed Mary not to be frightened because the Word of God never failed and that God would see her through.

God chose Mary because although she sinned, and made mistakes, she had done her absolute best and put in the effort to honor God by living a righteous life according to the law. God chose to bestow the blessing of giving birth to his one and only son because she had the strength to endure all of the tests and trials that would come with being the mother of Jesus. At that time it was considered unheard of to become pregnant and not be intimate. Even Joseph, upon hearing that she was pregnant, was going to leave her because he thought that she had been unfaithful. God knew that Mary could handle the scrutiny and the pressure that would come from those around her. Mary knew that if God had already ordained for it to happen she would do as he asked. [ I am the servant of the Lord. Let all that you have said happen to me. Luke 1:38]

The Reward of Being Pure

The best reward that can be offered for upholding purity and remaining pure is the promise to be in God’s presence. Quite frankly, there is no better reward than to be pleasing in God’s sight. Staying pure, not only benefits you but those who are close to you as well. To stay pure is a difficult task as there are so many temptations and devices made accessible in the world, placed there by the devil, that are meant to corrupt, defile, and pervert the mind. As a follower of Christ, staying pure can strengthen and increase your level of discernment, decision-making, as well as clear thoughts. Remaining pure can help with increasing your overall spiritual health as well as peace. Purity helps to correct you when you are wrong so that you can be more like Christ. Keeping a pure mind and heart will help you in avoiding temptation, lust, and the other sins that God finds detestable. A benefit or reward of having purity in the heart and in the mind will free you from guilt. When you are pure you have no problem allowing the Holy Spirit to live in and guide you throughout life. It keeps you humble so that you depend on God without falter. Purity will help you uphold God’s Commandments. It helps you to create, keep, and honor healthy relationships with other people. The bible states [Therefore encourage one another and build one another up just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11] The bible also mentions that [with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 5:33].

Worldly Perspective on Purity

The world does not want you to stay pure. The world wants to corrupt you with its sin, filthiness, temptations, devices, and footholes. The world will have you out here thinking that it’s okay to sin, that it’s okay to gossip, be prideful, greedy, and lustful. Remember what we talked about in Week 1: The Deadly Series; Pride, the Devil is highly intelligent. He knows the Word of God, from cover to cover. He knows what God expects from his followers so he already knows how to distract you. He already knows what to tempt you with.

I mentioned in Week 3: The Deadly Series: Lust, that you can not look anywhere and not see something that doesn't revolve around sex, temptation, or lust. Guarding our hearts, mind, spirits through the Word of God is the only way of true deliverance and covering.

Shades of Purity

  • I want to save myself for marriage!

  • I will set boundaries when dating!

  • I will assert my standards upfront when it comes to courting someone!

  • I will not tempt myself in anything that leads to ungodliness!

  • I will purify my mind, body, and soul through the reading of God’s Word!

  • Lord shield me from the wickedness in this world so that I can remain pure in thine eyes.

  • The Holy Spirit convicts me so that I can correct what is wrong.

  • My mind is fastened in the bible to know when I am spiritually out of order!

  • Because others are sometimes unaware of the temptations they carry, I will set boundaries to protect my heart, mind, and spirit!

Characteristics of Purity

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 1 Thessalonian 4:3-5

Humbleness

Asceticism

Expression of gratitude

Self-disciplined

Abstinence

Put Your Purity In ✅

Golden Nuggets I Leave You!

Hey my Golden Dreamers, we discussed a lot in this post about purity. If I could leave you with one thing it would be that there is immense power in the sanction of marriage. We can display purity in two ways, one by saving ourselves until marriage and two being under the protection of marriage. God is pleased when we practice purity, humbleness, and asceticism.

I hope today’s topic penetrated your mind, heart, and soul. I pray that it has shifted you into purpose according to what God has for you. Lastly, I’ll leave you with this, be mindful of your lustful desires. Your impurities. Bounce temptation, lust, and sexual desires off of you just as quickly as they come at you. Do not dwell in it, choose to be transformed by it.

Show acts of Humility and Asceticism and purity. Remember that forms of Pride, Greed, and Lust kill the spirit, but with God, you can be healed and restored. Amen.

Questions To Consider:

  1. What does purity mean to you? How has reading about purity impacted your viewpoint and perspective on it?

  2. Imagine the amount of pressure that Mary must have felt giving birth to the Son of God! Do you think that you could handle that responsibility?

  3. Am I engaging in sexual immorality?

  4. Knowing what I know now from today’s post, How will I apply it? How can I practice what I've learned?

  5. Am I ready to fully walk into a life of purity?

  6. [For the married couples] How can I keep the passion, intimacy, and pleasure burning within my marriage? As couples homework, read the book of Songs of Solomon. Do I find my spouse attractive still in the way that the husband and wife find each other in the book of Songs of Solomon?

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 corinthians 13:4-8
